High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

  • Organ Meats, e.g. liver, heart, lung, kidneys, and intestines - Even though food made from these parts of animals may be richer in vitamin B12, vitamin A, iron, and Vitamin D, they have higher concentrations of known cancer agents such as hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and toxins. These are higher concentrations of cholesterol - as much as 4 times more than contained by meat from other parts of the animal.
  • Eggs and cholesterol - these go "hand in glove". The egg yolk is particularly high in cholesterol. If eggs are part of your breakfast, you are simply making the hill steeper to climb. Typically, you get 425 mg of cholesterol per 100 gram of egg portion. Still some people say the effect of eggs on total cholesterol is negligible. Others are counselled by their doctors to leave it completely out of their diet or use only the white portion sparingly. To some extent, the result depends on your age, activity level, and several other factors.
  • Seafood and shellfish - Seafoods and shellfish are another group of high cholesterol foods, containing approximately 150 mg of cholesterol per 100 gram. Compared to lean meat, this cholesterol content is more than double. Shrimp, crab, oysters, and similar items used as food not only severely raise your cholesterol level, they pose several other health risks. Among these other problems are:
    • they are more difficult to digest
    • contain high levels of uric acid
    • increased potential for food poisoning, e.g. salmonella poisoning
    • food allergies
    • parasite infestation
